We had about two and a half days in Los Cabos, stayed at the Westin, which is in the Tourist Corridor, so about equidistance from both towns and the airport.
1) Hotel: The Westin was nice enough, all rooms seem to have an ocean view. We were with a large group so had a kind of boring breakfast buffet every day. The nachos at La Playa Restaurant were horrible, but another restaurant, La Cantina, had an excellent crab quesadilla. The beach had a black flag on it the whole time, meaning, do not swim! You could walk on the beach though, and at low tide you could go quite a long way. That was fun, but the coarse sand was hard on the feet. The hotel seemed really quiet – not much going on for activities, too far from the towns for any spontaneous sight-seeing. At night the sushi bar closed at 10:30 pm, even though it said they were open until 11. The only bar that was open was pretty much empty. I felt sorry for the two young ladies who were looking for some fun around there. The shuttle into town was expensive, $11 per person, though we overheard the driver charging one guy $12, but I think it was cheaper than a taxi. The drop-off point in Cabo San Lucas is a Tequila place where they give you samples and try to sell you timeshares. They were funny and friendly, but we just kept saying, No, thanks. Our group had an event at the Hilton, just up the road and the pools and beach there made the Westin look a bit shabby. Some people complained that they couldn’t get towels or soap replenished, but we didn’t have any problem in that department.
2. Restaurants: We ate at Voila in San Jose one night. It was excellent, especially the Sea Bass, I think it had a pistachio herb coating and cilantro risotto (I hate cilantro, but this was great). We started with the best tortilla soup we’ve ever had and some shrimp meatballs, which were pretty good. The lobster burrito was good, but rather heavy. Great service and presentation, decent wines at a good price. We started at Morgan Encore, nearby, but didn’t like the menu, wines by the glass were $10 or $12, so we left and went to Voila. For lunch, we went to The Office. It’s expensive, but we had great Margaritas, guacomole and the garlic crabs were outstanding. The next day we ate at Baja Cantina. The food was lousy. The fish tasted old and was indifferently presented, the mixed appetizer plate had a mess of overcooked calamari, soggy burritos and just-okay quesadillas. The margaritas were watery. The two-for-one Coronas were good, though. And you can sit in their beach chairs under a canopy all day if you buy drinks.
3. Stuff to do: We didn’t sign up for any trips, but went into Cabo both days. I was trying to get to Mendano beach, but was told by the shuttle driver that we couldn’t walk, we’d get lost, just take a cab for $2. When we got to the cab across the street, they wanted $6. This was annoying so we decided to just walk along the Marina. (The next day, we discovered a Pedestrian Path to the beach!) It was a really hot day, we were being constantly accosted by people selling stuff or trying to get us to eat lunch at one of the places on the docks. The day was going downhill when we decided to take a water taxi to the beach. It came to $4 a person, but worth it to get out on the water. It was fun to be dropped right on the beach, and we ended up having lunch at The Office, which was great. The water was great for swimming. We took a water taxi out to see El Arco, lover’s beach, etc. We were impressed by the skillful handling of the boats in choppy waters with lots of boats, kayakers, snorkellers. We viewed some colorful fish through the glass bottom, took pictures and heard interesting stories from our driver, all that for $20. He offered to drop us at Lover’s beach and come back for us, but we just wanted to see the sights and were ready for another beer. He dropped as at the Marina and we enjoyed a leisurely walk back to the shuttle stop.
4. Weather was HOT – in the nineties every day. I loved it, but you have to be careful not to get too burnt. The water was lovely at the beach.
5. Favorite things: the people are friendly and it’s fun to try to speak Spanish. Mostly, the food was good. The weather was perfect.
6. Regrets and disappointments: should have tried to stay one more day, since we couldn’t try other restaurants because most of our evenings were booked. Also, the drive to Todos Santos looked fun and we just didn’t have time. Our visit to San Jose wasn’t the charming experience we had planned because a political leader was in town, there was a loudspeaker blaring the whole time, soldiers everywhere and roads blocked off.
