I took a brief hiatus after HP V so that we could watch the movie, before spending Labor Day weekend finishing up with VI and VII. The movie was pretty good. I think they did a good job distilling the book down to some key elements, most notably Harry’s struggle with himself not to turn into a loner, but to open up to his friends. HP VII was a page-turner, the plot twists coming thick and fast. I had to reread the whole bit about the wands a second time to make sure I understood what was going on. The book was concerned with tying up all the loose ends generated from the beginning of the series and so lacked the appealing forumula of the first six: Harry’s birthday at Number 4, Privet Drive, some Dursley antics, off to Hogwarts, the mix of friends, enemies, teachers, mysteries, Quidditch and adventures, with some academic challenges thrown in, a tangle with Voldemort and then, back to Privet Drive. Now that I’ve read all the books again, seen all the movies at least once and listened to most of the books on tape (Jim Dale is great!), I guess it’s time to get back to reality.
